dance appreciation series

@ the esplanade

The Dance Appreciation Series is a collaboration between the Singapore Dance Theatre and The Esplanade to bring dance to a wider audience. The Series aims to engage teenagers and children with an interactive and informative programme including excerpts of performances and talks.

“It has been good working with SDT in educating the students about Dance and the Modern Dance Club dancers in my school have benefited much from the performance they participated in during the Ballet Under the Stars and watching the professionals at work. It made them learn what it was like to perform for the public and realise that it takes a lot of hard work to be as good as the professional dancers. ..... .Having afternoon sessions like the Giselle afternoon special is a good idea as it allows students to learn more about Dance and be more exposed to the industry.” - Christabel Lim, Kranji Secondary School

UPCOMING Presentation:
IntroDUCTION to Coppélia

As a lead up to Singapore Dance Theatre’s Season 2017 opening performance of Coppélia, we have condensed this classic into an hour special for young audiences! A ballet catered for all ages, Coppélia is a joyous ballet that radiates revelry and merriment throughout the theatre, from the stage to your very own seats.

This ballet tells the light-hearted story of the mysterious Dr Coppélius who owns a beautiful life-sized mechanical doll, Coppélia. A village youth named Franz, betrothed to the beautiful Swanilda becomes infatuated with Coppélia, not knowing that she is just a doll. The magic and fun begins when Swanilda disguised as Coppélia springs to life!

Duration of each session:

Each DAS session is capped at a duration of one hour.

What to expect for audiences:

Young audiences at DAS will either get to enjoy excerpts from full productions of Singapore Dance Theatre’s dances, or have the chance to re-live the magical moments of well-known classics like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. Each session will incorporate educational elements about dance, such as visual demonstrations of common moves used in choreography, as well as explanations of the ballets presented.

Children can also come dressed in their favourite character costumes and take photos with the cast after the show!
