Singapore Dance Theatre @ Fort Canning Centre

What is ONE @ The Ballet?
Initiated in 2009, One @ The Ballet is a dance presentation focusing on topics such as “The ballet behind the fairytale”, “what defines a dancer’s career”, to “how a choreographer creates a ballet” Within the format of each session, audiences will also get to watch excerpts from main performance seasons at this bi-monthly session on Saturdays from 1.00 to 2.00 pm at Singapore Dance Theatre.
This will conclude with a Behind-the-scenes tour which will feature a walk through the wardrobe (more than a thousand costumes) and an up close and personal encounter with SDT’s professional dancers.

Who are the audiences?
Be it for individuals, family outings or a part of school’s outreach programmes, One@The Ballet aims to engage with audiences through this interactive platform as well as to create an opportunity for us to meet new audiences including youth, senior citizens who have yet a chance to catch SDT’s performance.

Next Session 12 December - Swan Lake
We will explore some of the history and myth associates with the most famous of all ballets. SDT will show segments of two different acts of the full four act work. Elements of partnering work in pas de deux will be one of the topics of focus.

21 February – Cinderella
How Cinderella was created in this version for the Singapore Dance Theatre with costumes shown and several segments danced. We will explain how dancers learn and remember long complicated sections of choreography with the complex use of steps, patterns and musicality to realize the full effects of the choreographer’s intentions.

25 April – How To Dress A Dancer
Learn everything from ballet slippers and Pointe shoes to rehearsals clothes plus simple and elaborate costumes from the history of a ballerina’s tutu, headpieces to decoration pieces. Dancers will be shown in rehearsal of a ballet.

20 June – How A Choreographer Creates A Ballet
We will look into the art of choreography past and present . Why certain ballet have stood the test of time and become established classics. Elements such as choice of music, costumes and scenic Elements that has become a major factor in the final work will be discussed. We will also see a choreographer at work in creation and do an interview with SDT’s professional dancers.

22 August – Programming Dance Performances
How artistic directors arrive at what ballets will become part of the company’s performance repertoire and how they are combined with one another to make a balanced evening in performance. Why a ballet becomes a classic or fades from view will be discussed. SDT dancers will perform excerpts from coming performances. |

31 October – A Dancer’s Career
We will examine the arc of a professional dancer’s career from being a student to a professional dancer. Discussion topics includes “How long does it take to train a dancer?”, “What element defines a successful talent?”, “What are the rewards in a dancing career?” and “What dancers do once they retire?”
