| His Generosity
Despite falling ill in 1987, Choo San did not forget his vision of helping future choreographers. He formed “The Choo San Goh & H.Robert Magee Foundation” which aimed to help choreographers realize their potential through generous financial grants as well as to help oversee the licensing of Goh Choo San’s works. The pillar of the Foundation is its annual “Choo San Goh Awards for Choreography”. Since its inception, the Foundation has helped to nurture various talents, of which, many are well-known choreographers today. The recipients of this award include Merce Cunningham of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Christopher Wheeldon of New York City Ballet, Mauricio Wainrot at the Hubbard Street Dance Company, David Dawson and Jorma Elo, just to name a few.

His Legacy

Configurations |
Choo San left behind a total of 36 choreographic works and a legacy of generosity. In 1997 Singapore Dance Theatre commissioned a monograph on Goh entitled Goh Choo San, Master Craftsman in Dance containing a detailed overview of his life in written text and photos of his ballets. In honour of his memory, Singapore Dance Theatre pays tribute yet again this September 2007 by staging excerpts of some of his best-loved works. The Legacy of Goh Choo San, SDT’s gala event, will be premiering on the 7 th and 8 th of September at the Esplanade. To understand why Alan M. Kriegsman was willing to “go out limb and declare that Glow, dedicated to the memory of the Choo San’s father and set to Bohuslav Martinu’s neo-romantic Symphony No. 1, is Goh’s finest ballet to date,...” join us this September as we bring you the Legacy of Goh Choo San.
