In conjunction with this September’s annual Dance Reflections 2009, organized by the NUS Centre For the Arts, Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) presents a contemporary triple bill from September 4 to 5 that celebrates the beauty of ballet. Season of Brilliance – A Contemporary Triple Bill will bring together works by master choreographers of the 20th Century – Concerto Barocco by George Balanchine, Glow-Stop by Jorma Elo and Unknown Territory by Goh Choo San.

Set to Bach’s Concerto in D minor for Two Violins, Concerto Barocco is an example of George Balanchine’s love of a danced dialogue with music. In 1941, it premiered officially at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, and has been frequently revived. According to Balanchine, “If the dance designer sees in the development of classical dance a counterpart in the development of music and has studied them both, he will derive continual inspiration from great scores.”

One of Jorma Elo’s bigger ballets, Glow-Stop was choreographed for the American Ballet Theatre in 2006. The winner of the 2005 Helsinki International Ballet Competition (Choreography) expressed his fondness for music with Glow-Stop which contrasts the works of Mozart and Philip Glass. From two different time periods, Mozart's music (Symphony No. 28 in C, 4th Movement.) lets the choreography ‘glow’ with its bubbly lightness, while the driving pulsating beat of Glass’ piece (Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra , 2nd Movement) carries the dance to its end, becoming the ‘stop' component to Elo’s ballet. Glow-Stop premiered in Asia at the Singapore Arts Festival 2008.

Choreographed by Goh Choo San, Unknown Territory premiered in 1986 with The Washington Ballet. Goh was Associate Artistic Director with the ballet company and worked as teacher, artiste, choreographer and administrator from 1976. In 1987, Goh was awarded the Cultural Medallion (Dance), having worked with international dance companies such as the American Ballet Theatre, Berlin Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre and the Boston Ballet among others. In 1988, Goh's work, Beginnings, was performed by the Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) at the Singapore Festival of Arts, as SDT’s debut performance.

Don’t miss this amazing triple bill by master choreographers thatpromises enchanting sights and sounds to behold!
