Choreography by Edwaard Liang & Xing Liang Singapore/USA/China

Two brand new works from two outstanding Asian choreographers, Edwaard Liang and Xing Liang. Commissioned by the Singapore Dance Theatre, their creations for this double bill draw from Asian philosophies in distinctive ways.

As Above, So Below by Liang is loosely based on the Buddhist notion of  ‘bardo’, the world in between heaven and earth, a realm inhabited by wayward spirits and souls. Liang seeks to capture this otherworldly essence with an emotionally sensitive language in a dance that is achingly poignant and ethereal. The work expands on an idea that was first explored in Distant Cries, a pas de deux he created for the New York City Ballet in 2005.

Nameless by Xing is inspired by Lao Tzu’s classic Tao Te Ching and embraces the freedom and openness of creativity. Pulsating and energetic with a vibrant soundscape, this piece navigates the complex relationships in humankind, between individuals and with their environment and the greater universe. Xing deconstructs the classical ballet idiom to find new expressions, imbuing his choreography with an unbridled sense of curiosity and interactivity.

Liang was formerly with Nederlands Dans Theater I and Xing is currently resident artist of City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong. Both have received numerous accolades for their dancing and have been applauded internationally for their choreography. Refractions is a collaboration between Singapore Dance Theatre and Esplanade.
